My first attempt at Fondant. Having never worked with it before, (only eating previous to this) I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome.
I did find the heat from my hand would soften them up as i made the figures, but i think with more corn starch I'll be ok next time.
My opinion is: If you liked play dough as a kid. You'll love fondant.
Here's the finished set

And here's how i did it!
I made flower bases for each figure to sit on. Basically a cap to the cup cake. To do that i tinted a handful of fondant.

Really its just like squishing play dough around.
Next I rolled it all out. I used icing sugar so it doesn't stick. I used a fondant roller i bought for $9.99 CAD. (VERY handy!)

Once it was a uniform thickness i cut out the flower shapes

Next I tinted all the other colours. Some colour mixing was required. I mean... who owns those crazy bright colours? I just added colours until i had the vibrancy i needed.

Next i moved onto the figures. I wont lie. They weren't easy. I basically just played with the fondant shaping it into bottles, pacifier nipples and free hand cutting out the heart with a knife. (easier than i thought).
The Ducks were harder. I started with a duck body (sorry no pics. My hands were occupied!) then i made a ball for the head. Next i made beaks out of a small triangle. (Just stick it on!). The wings were tear drop shapes (again.. free hand formed) stick them on and use a toothpick to leave impressions that look like feathers.
Later use a tooth pick dipped in black food colouring to poke eyes. (Don't over do the black. It will bleed into the yellow)
Before Eyes

After Eyes

Next i cut out circles to make the pacifier. I used a bottle cap believe it or not. I didn't have cookie cutters small enough.
Next Assemble everything. Fondant is great. No glue required. (as long as the fondant is warm and plyable). It all just stuck after they sat for a while.

Later i popped them on the cupcakes.
See how cute?

And that's all! Good experience. So much so in fact I'm going to take a fondant and gum paste class in Aug!
